this is the first recording of part of the song when it hurts, its in total demo form and raw raw raw, everything about it will probably change but, if im going to start to show you to process of songs, then as hard as it is for me to let things out unfinished…
[display_podcast]
anyways, recorded direct to my laptop mic on garageband, the way all songs start, with vocal and guitar

DREADFUL!
Just kidding. You know I love it to pieces, don’t you?
Graeme
The whole “admiration” thing is quite scary. I always find myself weird trying to really -enter- a voice of a singer I like, to really catch that vibe that makes the artist special for me.
But I think being a fan of an artist is not only liking the final product, the cd or the book, its being fascinated by the creation part. Putting “when it hurts” or any other raw version makes me feel like attending to a painting with a painter, to the shooting of a photographer… I think that hearing a song from its starts get us closer to the artist, as an human being like us and not only as a public face you see on tv and in magazines, involved in the creation process. Its great to be able to understand how you create your art.
From the day I started listening to your music I always preferred hearing early-raw and different versions of your songs to hear what part you change into it ( cd/live performances.), the lower and higher notes you suddenly add to it ( thanks bootleg for these kinds of -analysis- ), the words that are replaced by others, the instrument that are being used instead of others…
I have the chance everyday to work with poetry writers in a publishing house that really give me shivers when they explain the process that led them to write certain things in a certain ways. Thank you for giving the chance to the people that are fascinated by your voice, your writings and your music to attend your creation process, not many artists can give this to their public.
Very well said, coldnakedmorning. I think David’s fans are more of the exception than the rule when it comes to what is made available to a target audience. So many artists only want material issued in polished form, and far too often it’s the creative process which showcases the hidden depths of a song. (The Beatles’ Anthology series is a fine example of fans eventually getting to hear how songs came to be, but David is making this instantly available to us, and I think that’s phenomenal. It’s also very open and daring when you consider he, by his own admission, doesn’t like to release a song so soon after its conception, for wont of a better word.)
By the time we hear official versions of “Only You” and “When It Hurts,” the essence of those songs will be the same, but the intensity of them may have changed. I literally dropped into the drama of his early take on “Only You,” and can’t wait to see how it grows from here. The passion for these new songs is paramount to David now, and this is clear from his enthusiasm for them, so I think it’s a rare treat that we get to hear them in this format while the creative juices are still flowing.
Of course, during the evolution, songs can often become even more glorious. “Alone in The Universe” comes to mind: I’d always liked the song as heard on cd or radio, but when I heard it live, I was gobsmacked. The live version, with its delicate harmony lines and acoustic feel is more earthy, more expansive somehow. I really appreciate, from both an aural and poetic perspective, how the song has morphed into something entirely different from the recording. Does anyone else feel this way about “Alone in The Universe”?
Now all I have to do is live in hope that “Science” will somehow evolve into a live number.
Graeme
I have to say… covers are great fun but NOTHING compares to hearing original material like this for the first time!! And I think that you are a rare artist in that your raw material has such amazing substance and the recording process can refine and add to the work but in no means defines it! I cna understand it being hard to release so early on but I am thrilled that you are taking the chance. Fear is good, right?
Graeme - AITU has always been the ultimate live song for me. It seems to feed off the crowd so much that I very rarely listen to a version of it that isnt live!
And I second the Science plea. I have been dying to hear it live since Strange Birds was released!!!
xox
Great!
what a incredibly beautiful song.. i love it so much!!!!!!
..thank you so much for sharing it here, especially since it was a hard thing for you to do.
needing to go back and listen again!! …and again…ect ect!!
xoxo take care!
courtney
Shannon,
Let’s start a “Sing ‘Science’ live” campaign.
And re: AITU, it definitely feeds off the crowd. I so remember the sheer joy on David’s face watching us all sing along with it earlier this year.

man oh man…….one raw song and I already know this acoustic album is going to blow people away!……
now I’m on twitter and flickr….not to mention my usual myspace and facebook……i better strike it rich so that I have time to keep up with all of this..haha….
cheers,
..Paul..
You weren’t kidding when you said it was raw. And that’s what I love about it. There is such a soothing and intimate feel to it. It’d be interesting to see how it evolves. So thank you for posting this so early on! I guess you really
ARE fearless
Shannon and Graeme, I completely agree about Science. It’s one of my favourite songs off the new album and I’m dying to hear it live. It would be nothing short of amazing!
WOW…if that is raw, then the final product should be just as powerful as your other pieces.
Thanks, yet again, for sharing. I know we all appreciate you opening up to us.
Good luck and take care
After listening to the clip and reading all the eloquent posts, I am truly at a loss for words, all I can say is ditto, yes, yes, yes, that is they way I feel exactly. You are a giving artist and I appreciate the time you are taking to invite us into this process. I hope one day to have the opportunity to shake your hand and thank you in person.
Hum,, i think you should let this song like this on CD, like a hidden track or something,, i really like that. RAW version. Thank you so much to share. And im agree for the Science live,,, i would like to know how its sound live… PLEASE!! heheh,,, Well, im very happy, you post a lot of new things, often, and gently, thank you again… Im feeling more connected . Thats cool !
BY THE WAY … do you know what im thinking right now ??? It would be awesome (ok, and expensive i guess ) to have symphonic orchestra behind your voice in this song (When it hurts) i dunno, i just got a flash … i looooove
orchestra, its so intense…
wow..I love it just like that..something about a raw acoustic version that I love. It would be pretty cool to include a song or two on an album just like that.
Are you planning on adding a Victoria show in by the way? Hope so!!!!
I need my fix!
cheers:)Lindsay
Thank you for doing this!!!
I cannot wait for a live album…one of my faves is the live version of St Lawrence River at the end of the Hallucinations cd *sigh*
That song still gives me goose bumpes every single time I hear it, live especially and it more than likely always will.

(Too Close to the Sun, and Black Black Heart are a couple of my fave live songs, especially when Kim was touring with you!)
Im so excited for a live cd to come out a new tour to begin!!! Thanks again for sharing with us!
Beautiful. Honestly, beautiful. Hearing your voice always makes me smile and brightens up my most dreadful of days. Thank you.
I like this too.Sounds interesting.
I absolutely love your raw music. Too many artists spend too much time dressing up a song that has no meaning or substance. What I enjoy about your music is that it begins with substance and builds from there. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of this creation process and I look forward to hearing more.
On another note, I am pregnant and every time I seem to be listening to your music the baby seems to perk up and kick! Not even born yet, but seems to be connected to your music! So keep playing
Glad to hear that you are moving back home!
I love it…the song is so soft
hi david!
feels like i’m just sitting right beside you man : )
please sing “science” at the phoenix show…no pressure : D
thank you for your kindness…
telo
It seems to me that “Science” is emerging as a clear favourite here. Any chance we’ll hear it live in the future, David?
Graeme
It sounds very good! I’m excited to hear it entirely. I adore the idea to share with us the process of writing a song. Following the process of a song coming to life, it’s very exciting. We couldn’t ask for more!
Thank you!
Science! Science! Science!
(and I’m loving when it hurts! :))
cm
wow that was amazing! your voice is so unbelievable I think its incredable that no matter if its raw, live, or reproduced on a CD you have such an amazing consitancy thats absolutly astounding no matter what….completely mind blowing really its something that seperates you from other artists becuase no matter what your voice is at its best, where as other artists voices tend to have inconsistancies, and some can’t at all sing with out the aid of the record company, where as you are just, I dont even know, when you got it you got and you have it! can’t wait to see what becomes of this song!
love it. more, please.
beautiful. if this is only the rough cut, it’ll be amazing finished. like it this way, though.
wow ! amazing, love it when you are raw ! gave me the creeps !!!!
