So the time has come to start thinking about the coming fall tour. Packing is done (almost) and its back to music! There are so many songs to choose from, and i would love to get some ideas of what you would like to hear.

There are three catagories

3 Covers (any genre is fine, remember madonnas Music and michael jackson)

Finally, i need all your ideas to be in one place where i can sort them, so leave them as comments under this heading but at my blog site only, www.davidusher.com/blog (it gets to confusing otherwise)

From shannon — August 21, 2007 @ 7:47 pm

Oooooh, this is my kinda conversation! I am going to list the things I would love to hear by album leaving out the most obvious singles.

Unholy
SCIENCE
White Flag
Some People Say
Blinded
I’m Coming Down
Souring,
Hey Kids

Moist – Deliver Me, Sunday Comes (I know I’m dreaming here but I always thought it would be incredible live!!!), Underground

Cover - ??? I need to ponder this one for a bit, I am still LOVING the Crazy cover

From LadyMisty — August 21, 2007 @ 7:50 pm

Well I am in great company so far here with Telo and Graeme!! Hi guys! :-)

1. Moist: Silver. (Please David! We are silver. Every feeling will dissolve. It captures the concert experience SO well. You are our morphine and we are under your spell at every show. Let us hear you sing those words as we drink you in. I’ll be wearing my silver nail polish in Montreal.)

2. You Solo: White Flag. (You played this at Casino NS in May but I didn’t know the lyrics too well then. Now it’s one of my faves, so beautiful. And you didn’t play it in New Glasgow, or did you? I’m eager to hear it live again now that I love it so much.)

3. You Solo: St. Lawrence River. (A David Usher concert without St. Lawrence River would be like Montreal without lovers making out on street corners, like New York without pastrami & rye… it would be really sad.)

3a. You Solo: Jesus Was My Girl. (It was on the setlist in New Glasgow but you didn’t play it! Probably because it was an all-ages show. We really missed that song!)

4. Cover: What to say? When I heard Thriller at the start of your NS shows I loved it. I’ve seen you play your Pink, Madonna and let’s do it like they do on the Discovery Channel covers, and Crazy was wicked & you could have a hit single with it.
But hmm, my no. 1 love in music other than you, for the past 25 years has been George Michael. If you wanted to do retro-80s stuff, what about some Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go or even 1987’s ‘Faith’? Maybe not the whole thing - but it would be fun! Madonna’s Get Into The Groove, anything by Depeche Mode, Temptation or other songs by The Tea Party, Tori Amos Crucify or Silent All These Years. Oh oh oh I know: HEAD LIKE A HOLE! NIN!! Yes!!

I’m sure whatever you decide it will be fantastic as always.
Love
Lise in Halifax, NS

From Brenda — August 21, 2007 @ 7:58 pm

It’s no secret that I would really love for you to sing “Science”

From telo — August 21, 2007 @ 8:08 pm

i forgot to add: “only you” heheh
and this is for the phoenix show in toronto, david…. : D

From Elillusio — August 21, 2007 @ 8:08 pm

Coming to Vancouver from Britain to see your show - can’t wait!

Favourites from Strange Birds are:
Blue, White Flag & Brilliant

From If God had Curves:
Faithless

Anything and everything from Hallucinations

Black Black Heart and Fast Car from Morning Orbit

St Lawrence River (of course), Trickster, Unholy, Dirty and Beautiful from Little Songs.

Also Galaxy is great.

I’d love to hear Gasoline.

As for covers, maybe quite obvious, but they’re the songs I add to my “David Usher playlist”

Incubus ‘Drive’
Travis ‘Love Will Come Through’

Been a fan for 6 years - will be great to finally see you live!

From drankmywar — August 21, 2007 @ 8:34 pm

Hi!

I love all your songs, but Black Black Heart is my favorite, and St Lawrence River.

Now for covers, I think maybe some Placebo? Like “Every You Every Me” or “Pure Morning”, and maybe Imogen Heap’s “Hide & Seek”? Ohhhh or maybe Bjork’s “Human Behavior”…. omg there are so many songs that you could do an amazing job at singing…. what about Rihanna’s “Umbrella” there are already a few covers out there, but I bet yours would be awesome.

From drankmywar — August 21, 2007 @ 8:37 pm

Wait I have more ideas for covers, LOL.

What about AFI’s “Silver & Cold” or “Prelude 12/21″?

From MTLGina — August 21, 2007 @ 8:40 pm

Hey David, thanks for the opportunity to help choose your set list! :)

A few of my personal faves:

Leave it alone
Resurrection
Tangerine
Little Songs
Black Black heart
Alone in the Universe
Tomorrow comes
Faithless
The Music
Ugly is beautiful
So far down
Blue
White flags
Some people say

(but really David, I have to say that I think any song from the latest album would be awesome. The record is AWESOME as a whole! Seriously. Your best thus far I think). You can’t go wrong here…looking forward to seeing you in Oct!
Peace,
Gina

From chantal — August 21, 2007 @ 8:58 pm

Hi,

Of course you have to do Black black heart.. :), St-Lawrence river, for the cover…a Jonas song or Bon Jovi. Cant wait to see you in montreal at the metropolis i will be there.

From Elillusio — August 21, 2007 @ 9:11 pm

Thinking a little more outside the box than my earlier comment.

Possibilties for covers:

Holly McNarland - Elmo

Skunk Anansie (Don’t know how well she is known outside of the UK) - Weak, or Twisted

Even though it’s been covered so many times, it would be fantastic to hear you sing How Soon is Now?

From resurrected — August 21, 2007 @ 9:18 pm

Solo:
Trickster
White Flag
How Are You
Numb
Tomorrow Comes
Souring
Hope

Moist:

leave it alone!

From LadyMisty — August 21, 2007 @ 10:27 pm

Me again. I can’t believe I forgot this one for a cover idea! I always thought you would sing this one great!
Ok here goes then I’ll shut up!

SMASHING PUMPKINS: Bullet With Butterfly Wings.

Oh I can just picture it, you on stage starting the song “The world is a vampire…”
That song is perfect for you isn’t it? It has soft lulls in it then big loud crashing vocals, to encompass a whole range for you vocally and allow you to have very high energy performance but with quiet moments within the song as well. You would perform this song brilliantly!!

From celebi251ca1 — August 21, 2007 @ 10:28 pm

Hey there. I would love to her your version of the following songs:
-Under The Bridge by the Red Hot Chili Peppers
-Everlong by the Foo Fighters
-Any song from Pascale Picard

As for you own songs, Anything!! I love them all!

And finally Moist…I guess Leave it Alone, Breathe and Gasoline.

Those are the songs i would most love to here.

From first crallowbird — August 21, 2007 @ 10:45 pm

alright…. not that I’m getting sick of the usual “singles” like…”Alone in The Universe” and “Black Black Heart”, but they are played A LOT. and usually close together

From Venera — August 21, 2007 @ 10:48 pm

Wow, this is unbelievable! We get to have input into the setlist! I actually really love the one that you have had so far so I’ll try to keep this short. I would love to hear (at the Montreal show):

1. SCIENCE!!!
2. Message Home - never heard it before
3. Everything is alright… - hope that stays
4. Resurrection and Push - hope these stay too; could not be happier with them!
5. I can’t think of a different cover right now but Only You would be great
6. Some People Say - if you can fit it in; I mean, this tour is in support of the new album after all!

Thank you for everything!

From Venera — August 21, 2007 @ 10:52 pm

Well, of course, the singles are played a lot. There has to be something for the casual fan too. I’ve convinced a few people who have never seen a David Usher show before to go to this concert and I’m sure they’d have more fun if they recognize some of the songs. Plus, they’ve never had the pleasure of hearing them live before!

From first crallowbird — August 21, 2007 @ 10:53 pm

ok… i posted a set list, but i guess it didn’t show up?
here it is again… hopefully!! (in no particular order)

Sorry! Too bad we can’t edit. I forgot:

7. Surfacing

From Caroline — August 21, 2007 @ 11:16 pm

Ok let’s give this a try.

1 David Usher songs
- I really miss Babyskin Tattoo, Too Close to the Sun, Hey Kids and Surfacing.
- Would be really curious to see what Wolves or Going Home would sound live.

2 Moist songs (im only going to do one or two)

-Shotgun or Machine Punch Through
-Mike Hammer (Wishful thinking of course, but I will die if I ever hear it live)

3 Covers (any genre is fine, remember madonnas Music and michael jackson)

That’s a tough one - because you’ve come up with some very interesting ones already.
How about some Duran Duran, why not- Electric Barberella
Something fun and up-tempo!

From Caroline — August 21, 2007 @ 11:30 pm

No… the perfect song to cover.
Pets - Porno for Pyros

You could have so much fun with that one…

From Maxime — August 21, 2007 @ 11:34 pm

1 - Life of Bees, Happy Ending, Unholy Dirty and Beautiful, Too Close to the Sun, Surfacing, Wolves, Blinded, Hallucinations, Millions. And of course, Where it Hurts would be a nice addition. Forgive Everything too hehe.

2 - As for a Moist song, I would KILL to have the chance to hear Mandolin or Place live. Really, any song we don’t hear often, like, not a single, and I’d be super happy. I mean, I love Push, Resurection, Underground, Silver, Leave it Alone, etc etc etc but since I never had the chance to see you perform in the Moist era, a non-single song would be awesome and would totally make my week. Hell, even my month…

3 - Cover? Hum, Only When I Lose Myself by Depoche Mode. My December by Linkin Park would be good too. Automatic Flowers by Our Lady Peace ? Yeah, Automatic Flowers woud rock. Justify my Love by Madonna. The Greatest by Cat Power. Sorry if that’s a lot of suggestions, it’s just so hard to pick one.

From Sabrina aka Angelinfire — August 21, 2007 @ 11:57 pm

Wow, its busy here!!!!

My choices:

-SCIENCE

From Laura — August 22, 2007 @ 10:55 am

i think that after all these albums, and all these years of touring solo, as well as with Moist, that it is now totally and completely necessary for your shows to be at LEAST 2 hours long :) hehehe… wishful thinking i know. but seriously. i’m not joking.

i also think it would be ridiculously awesome if you could find a way to play the entire Strange Birds album live, and then play some selected hits afterwards. i know of some other bands that have tried this approach with their new albums, and its worked quite well!

that being said, here are some songs that i would love to hear on the upcoming tour:

David Solo Stuff:

- SCIENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- White Flag
- Life of Bees
- How Are You
- I’m Coming Down
- Blinded
- In This Light

MOIST stuff:

- FREAKY BE BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
- Sunday Comes
- Believe Me
- Into Everything
- Push
- Tonight

COVERS:

i dunno. i still really like the Crazy cover. and i think you could definitely pull off some Justin Timberlake!

Not to be negative, but i wouldn’t miss My way out if you took it out of the set… plus, as much as i love St. Lawrence River, it’d be fantastic to hear a new closer!

can’t wait for the tour!

From tye — August 22, 2007 @ 11:21 am

Wow SO MANY responses already!!

David.

I would LOVE to hear you play your version of FAST CAR when you stop in e-town (Edmonton).

I have ALWAYS wanted to hear you play that live since the first time i heard it on Morning Orbit. So PLEASE! If you could, that would be AMAZING!

Alright, I don’t know if I can narrow down my choices for your songs, but I think it would be really fun to play mostly or all songs that you’ve never or rarely played live before. It’s fun to hear the hits when the whole room is singing along, but it’d be such a treat to hear things that I haven’t heard done live before. And since you were just on tour for Strange Birds, this could be you b-side tour : )

Moist songs:
Gasoline, Liberation or Low, Low, Low

Covers:
Dear God by XTC, Sweet Dreams or Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson (SD originally by the Eurythmics of course)

From Larsh — August 22, 2007 @ 7:21 pm

Cover song -
I’ve Just Seen A Face - Paul McCartney/The Beatles (When I hear this song in my head, it is your voice singing it. Weird, I know.)

Hi David,

I’m a huge fan of your music for many years now. In fact, my favorite band was Moist. I’ve been so inspired by you and your bandmates that I started writing songs and my friends and I formed a band together called PÜR. Thanks David for what you brought to me as a human being and a musician. We are from Quebec city and we’ll be in Toronto for the recording of our first album in the next few days. Mark Makoway will mix our first record.

Hi David,

I have a special request for your Nov 17th performance in Markham, ON.

When I was younger, my older brother would play/sing “Sister” by the nixons for me. And since I won’t hear him play it for me anymore, I was hoping that maybe you would. It would really mean a lot to me.

Thanks a bunch.

From DiamondWillow — August 24, 2007 @ 10:17 am

I love Queen, but for gods sake - Please… no Under Pressure…. *shudder*. You might as well do Radio GaGa *gag*… (Roger Taylor’s original title - Radio Caca… :) ) And if you do something like we will rock you/champions …. I will be terribly, terribly let down. I think of all the Queen songs out there, there are FAR, FAR better ones that will be much more representative of David’s ability than any of those.

From JenHorak — August 24, 2007 @ 10:22 am

Oh boy.. I have a feeling this concert will be the best out of the 6 times I’ve seen you already.

I would absolutely love to hear you play “Deliver Me” and “Underground” from your Moist collection.

Devil By My Side is a must - my absolute favourite.
Soldiering is one i have yet to hear live, and it’s so beautiful.
Mark a vote down for Blue, Unholy Dirty & Beautiful, and Tomorrow Comes (I choreographed a dance to that song and taught it to my competitive dance team - we won 1st place. I would love to hear it live.)

As for covers:

Let Her Cry - Hootie and the Blowfish
Life on Mars - David Bowie
Under Pressure - Bowie & Queen
32 Flavours - Ani DiFranco
Faith - George Michael
What About Love - Heart
Because The Night - Patti Smith

Only You by Yazoo is a must - please play it at the Toronto show, its a very nostalgic song for me that i completely forgot about until i saw it on your blog. Brought back very fond memories of warming up during dance class when i was 3yrs old. Thank you.

From Graeme — August 24, 2007 @ 11:54 am

Sorry, but I have to gently disagree about the shuddering remarks made about “Under Pressure” and “Radio Gaga.” The latter, in particular, is deceptively simple sounding, but is musically and lyrically a masterpiece. If one really listens to the lyrics (particularly not focussing on the “gaga” part), it’s a melancholic lyric about how radio was once such a force in our lives, but has now been overshadowed and replaced by “all this visual.” It’s wistful and magnificent, especially when it was performed live. And it really made sense as far as the revamped “Metropolis” was concerned. “Radio Ga Ga” was huge in Britain, where it really brought a nation together, but the song signalled the end of Queen’s reign in North America. I never figured out why. I think it’s a brilliantly constructed song. But it’s certainly not something I can ever imagine David covering. I can, on the other hand, hear his interpretations of “Under Pressure” or “Too Much Love Will Kill You.”

:-)

Graeme

I posted earlier but I completely forgot to ask for St-Laurence river, I know you ususally play it but don’t leave it aside…!!!!

From telo — August 24, 2007 @ 3:10 pm

david can pull “under pressure” really well…..
i can see it!!!!
but it’s his choice that’s why we’re here to share thoughts : ]

From DiamondWillow — August 24, 2007 @ 3:33 pm

Oh yes, the meaning of Radio Gaga is quite clear. I was never saying they were poorly written or technically bad songs . Inspired by his young son, Roger did a fine job of writing it, no doubt about it, there is certainly no wondering the meaning, it makes perfect sense and is similar in the lamenting to Video Killed the Radio Star ;) . Just not one of my personal faves… unfortunately I never got an opportunity to see them live. (though I would have given my eye teeth to!) As for Under Pressure, again, not one that particularly inspired me (but god help me, I know all the words! LOL). Perhaps I just found their oldest works to be more aurally - interesting… so I was either spoiled and could not appreciate their ’simpler’ music…. or my ear was ruined by it! LOL (err, that would not bode well for David though!!) :) I also find that their *anthems* get played so much, it becomes tiring. Now - Too Much Love Will Kill You is an interesting possibility… :) Not being a musician myself, I cannot envision the possibilities of a song, I will admit that a cover of Killer Queen done on Canadian Idol (yes, I watched it… it was about Queen!) was pretty amazing… the singer did a fine job making it hers. This is the reason I have not added my ‘fave covers’ I just have no clue. I know what I like… and I like David Usher… hearing him live is something unique and gives me an apprecation of what can be done to a song that I can hear everyday popped into my cd player… I guess I just like to be entertained, and those songs are not my faves by Queen to start is all… Graeme, I am confident you have had opportunity on several occasions to hear what David can do to a song and therefore can be sure of what will come of certain songs. I have not - nor will I likely ever, get that honour or opportunity. I will hear what I hear after having paid my money. I just wanted to take the opportunity we have been given to have a voice in what will be played by voicing mine, it certainly was not a dig or a personal attack. I have found all the other suggestions quite interesting but I have a few definite heartfelt dislikes and it has been only for some songs from a band I absolutely adore. (If someone was to do a DU cover or Moist cover - and you only had an opportunity to hear one or two, I am sure you would really want to make sure they were ones you preferred!)
Cheers!!
Danielle

i wanna hear you play ‘paint it black’ by TRS :P please play it in winnipeg lol

From Graeme — August 24, 2007 @ 5:18 pm

Hi Danielle,

Oops. I hope my reply didn’t seem like an attack either. :-) You seem to be just like me - very passionate about music and expressive too. That’s wonderful. I respect what you’re saying about those songs, and you’re right about the Queen anthems being overplayed. I totally agree with you. And you certainly know a lot about one of the greatest bands of all time! Four very talented people who created some of the best music ever. I would adore hearing David cover “Too Much Love Will Kill You” or “Killer Queen.” I can imagine how they’d sound, especially KQ.

Similarly, I would definitely want a say in hearing the songs closest to my heart, so I know how you feel.

Have a lovely weekend.

:-)

It’s hard to narrow several songs to just a few. Aside from what you have played, others I’d hope to hear you play are….

Your songs:
- Baby Skin Tattoo
- Trickster
- Science
- White Flag
- Hallucinations
- Jesus was my girl

Moist songs:
- I don’t know too many but RESURRECTION is my fave of the ones I do know

Cover songs:

- any song(s) you’d like to pull off :)

From Cheryl — August 25, 2007 @ 4:36 pm

So I had a chance to think about some covers:

Say It Right - Nelly Furtado
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
Hurt - NIN
Smile - Lily Allen
No. 1 Crush - Garbage
Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefani
I Walk The Line - Johnny Cash
Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics
Body Language - Queen

From sisabelle — August 25, 2007 @ 6:38 pm

In the David Usher category, you have to do My Way: I think I can play that song 25 times in a row and I won’t get tired of it!

As for a cover song, why not go crazy? Gloria from Laura Brannigan… one of my all time favorite!

From LadyMisty — August 25, 2007 @ 8:47 pm

Ok, I know you already have tons of replies to sift through David but I have to say one more thing cuz I made a mistake! When I suggested a cover of Tori Amos “Silent All These Years” I meant Precious Things.
Silent All These Years is a song written from a woman’s point of view, and so are most of her songs, even Precious Things. So never mind me.

But you could do “Little Earthquakes” really well, especially with lyrics that look as if they had been written by you:

“And I hate and I hate
Disintegration watching us wither
Black winged roses that safely change their color
I can’t reach you, I can’t reach you

Give me life, give me pain
Give me myself again… ”

– I still think you would cover her “Crucify” brilliantly!
– NIN “Hurt” that someone else suggested, yes I agree!!

Tori is playing the day after your show in Montreal - I know at least 2 of your fans who are going to see her at Place des Arts (me and Dominick!)
So Tori is really going to be on our minds when we see you play at the Metropolis! *blatant-hint-for-a-Tori-cover* LOL! xxxx

From stejar58 — August 26, 2007 @ 2:20 am

Hi, David,

I have two favourite songs of yours that I would love to hear in your show to Vancouver-Brilliant and Love will save the day. And then, from your Moist repertoir- I love Underground and Tonight.
And as a cover- have you ever thought of a Doors song? Also, something by Radiohead- Karma Police?
See you in Vancouver!

From AlannaHagon — August 26, 2007 @ 1:47 pm

Gosh that’s hard. I really appreciate anything you play, because I don’t think there is honestly a song that I dislike.
But, since you’re asking, and i’m oh-so-willing to comply; here would be my ‘perfect’ set-list.. (granted, not specifically in this order)

Unholy, Dirty and Beautiful
Forestfire
F Train
The Music
Ugly Is Beautiful
Life Of Bees
My Way Out
Devil By My Side
In This Light
Surfacing
Love Will Save The Day
Hey Kids
The Wolves

Than for a cover, while I do love your version of “If you tolerate this” by the Manics, maybe something different by them? Maybe.. hm.. Anything off “The Holy Bible” would be epic, since it’s my personal favourite from them, however, it’s a lot of super fast songs, and I think you’d be better at the softer side of Manics. I know, anything off of the album, “This is my truth, tell me yours.” :)

As for other covers;
Miss You Love ~ Silverchair
JCB song ~ Nizlopi
On the Radio ~ Regina Spektor
Coin Operated Boy ~ The Dresden Dolls
Mein Heir ~ Cabaret (heh..)

From Sintra — August 26, 2007 @ 3:58 pm

Here are my faves….Trickster, Jesus was my Girl, Black, Black Heart, Blinded, Too Close to the Sun, Devil by my Side(PLEASE!!!), In this light, Surfacing, See you fall, HEY KIDS (PLEASE!!!!!!!!)

Moist songs: Doesn’t matter ’cause I love ‘em all!

As far as covers, I never really liked that “fast car” song - not a big fan of Tracy Chapman. I would love to see you do a Beatles cover!
THANKS!!!!!

From morphinebaby — August 26, 2007 @ 4:41 pm

posting again.. just ’cause..
for live covers, it’d be fun to hear something ridiculously superficial.. it’d sound so… false.. in such a good way.. i hope it’s not just in my head where that makes sense

full-out:
fergie - glamourous
jt - sexyback
christina - dirrty
madonna - dress you up & material girl
etc..

random:
sean kingston - beautiful girls
weezer-beverly hills

or if the show is gonna be acoustic/quiet , i stick to my verve, vast & nick drake votes

From Laura-C — August 26, 2007 @ 9:13 pm

Ok. Don’t laugh people. I came with new covers David could do.

-Heart Shaped Box - Nirvana.
I know it has been done a lot of times by different bands but David’s style could be fun to hear.
-Panic at the Disco - But it’s better if you do. (heheh ;))
Or James Blunt - Out of my mind.

I think you’re having a little of everything to choose from now David! Have fun! ;)

(sorry - not trying to beat a dead horse here)
This is a public apology to Graeme, and to anyone I’ve offended. The penny dropped and I realised I had not been speaking to the person I THOUGHT I had been speaking with. When read in context with who Graeme is, I made a comment that came across as very catty and uncalled for, it was definitely never my intent and I am so deeply sorry. This blog is not intended for this type of post either but since the thread was public and posted here I felt it needed to be dealt with here as well.
Regards to all
Danielle

From Graeme — August 31, 2007 @ 5:58 pm

Thanks Danielle. I think that’s lovely. I’m not at all offended. And I’m sure “the other Graeme” isn’t either. ;-)
