ive been reading your comments and yes the new site is a bit different than your normal site! the whole idea is based around the concept that i want it to be more interactive, and open up the process to you as much as possible. to do that im using some web tools that you may or may not have used before…

twitter - is an online application that allows me to communicate with you directly. i can be on my computer or any computer and send you a message, i can also send you a message from my cellphone. you can receive it on your computer or cell or both or neither (your choice). im thinking of all kinds of interesting ways to use it. i was thinking it would be good for contests because i could post it on twitter and it would appear everywhere at once. if you have your phone allowing messages from me, it would appear there too (again its your choice). so instead of you having to watch the website all the time to know when the contest is starting you could just get my twitter and know to go online and enter. another idea i have is these little ‘happenings’. if jon and i are in town we could twitter everyone that we are going to do 3 songs acoustic at the corner of college and spadina (or where ever). and if your around you could show up to get a free little acoustic set. fun

flickr - im using the flickr group because its a place where you can upload the photos you take at shows and we can all see them. just tag them “david usher” in quotes. its a great way to share photos.

Video - im still trying to find/develop a good video page

and then the tabs on the right are links to facebook, myspace etc.

anyways im really interested in the way this technology can work, there is a learning curve, but its actually quite fun once you start. and again its always your choice, you only need take part in as much as is comfortable for you.

The “happenings” sound amazing! That would be a fun message to get!

As for the rest, I really like it all but I am a bit of a web junkie.

From Laura — September 5, 2007 @ 8:41 pm

clearly its time i get with technology, and get a cell phone!!!! if some little “happening” message was sent out, and i didn’t get it, i’d totally die!!!! it sounds like such an incredible idea. plus who doesn’t love a bit of spontaneity!! i guess i should start with twitter on the comp… seems like its pretty fun!

things are really exciting in the david world right now!!!! thanks!!!! :)

From Maggie — September 5, 2007 @ 8:42 pm

hmm i like the happenings idea too. i can picture myself receiving a text msg during class and dash out to watch you guys perform.
and it’s fun to watch david become the new internet tools guru. = )

I’d like to see A LOT of ‘happenings’ in Montreal haha!

Seriously, the twitter idea is… a good idea.

From ephemera2005 — September 5, 2007 @ 9:31 pm

Hmmm….Very interesting. The contest, the happenings…Is like a game. I am a web junkie
and also i love good gadgets. We’ll see what happens. I wait the comments after everything will be done:) It will be so much fun…We all are lost in the music. We all -from this forum- are running after David’s music. Is good to be crazy:)

From Bryan — September 5, 2007 @ 9:43 pm

you’re becoming quite computer savy!!
it’s hard to keep up with all the new stuff coming out, but as an artist i’m sure they are good tools to use to keep your “fans” attention.

I feel that in the future people won’t even watch TV to see music videos. So you being as involved as you are with the “internet community” is a good step forward (in my opinion).
The world is changing faster than most people can keep up, as I’m sure you are well aware of!

take care!

From Sabrina aka Angelinfire — September 5, 2007 @ 10:38 pm

i tried to know how Twitter works,, damn,, how i should know if you’re on the next corner playing cool songs if im unable to understand how Twitter works… ;( Well, ill try to be on the net each day here on davidusher.com to know… !!
Well, im going to China later ,,i was supposed to go october 5th til oct 27th, but im leaving october 28th i think,,so,, i CAN go to your show in montreal ! Yay !!!!! want to be at the soundcheck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please! heheh ! Good luck David! -xx-

From amy — September 5, 2007 @ 10:40 pm

david: i really, really like the simple, to-the-point quality of the new site, and what i especially like about it is the intention behind it - so we as fans can become more directly involved in your online community. that is so important and so different from what so many other artists are doing online nowadays…instead of having all these fancy web developers to do the work for you, you have learned how to do it yourself and i really admire that because it shows how much you care.

i can honestly say that after not having had access to the internet pretty much all summer, to come back and discover your new online world is pretty exciting. it has definitely reeled me back in, and now i can’t seem to pull myself away from the computer! sound familiar?

anyway thanks again for inspiring me to get my creative juices flowing again, and especially for providing so many different ways to access you and your music directly. it’s so neat!

From quietlaughter — September 5, 2007 @ 10:53 pm

I think the new layout for the website is great…. making it interactive, rather than static is inspiring, and just plain fun. In a funny way it is pushing me to do some more work of my own…

anyway looking forward to seeing what your own exploring brings for you and your music… all very cool so far!

This twitter idea sounds really awesome…now it’s a matter of getting used to twitter :D don’t be surprised if your younger fans leave/skip class just to run and catch a small acoustic show, david! I would do so myself, but downtown’s too far to be able to catch ya! :(

From Graeme — September 7, 2007 @ 11:45 am

Oh, it’s not just the younger fans, lol. I’d definitely find an excuse to be absent from work should there be an impromptu jam at the corner of Burrard and Robson! As long as I remember to keep my cell phone on. You really did wake up this morning in a technology haze, didn’t you?

From andylou — September 7, 2007 @ 4:16 pm

I really think it’s cool to have things texted to my phone because it’s always with me, whereas sometimes I’m away from the computer for days at a time. My only problem is that I’m having trouble figuring out how I get messages sent to my phone from David Usher only. Do I have to make him a friend somehow? Can I get his tweets without getting updates from twitter itself or from others? Anyone know if it will make my phone number viewable to others? I only just got rid of the lady from India who kept calling to sell something at 3am. I don’t want her back.

Any help is appreciated. It’s a brilliant idea. The only thing better is a surprise acoustic session!!!!

From david usher — September 7, 2007 @ 5:33 pm

you only get tweets form people you “follow”
x

From Bryan — September 7, 2007 @ 5:51 pm

LOL @ “youll get all my TWEETS”
you made up the name “tweets” don’t lie David!
I know you were just dieing to tell people to follow you to get your tweets!
i’m just fuckin with ya! lol

From david usher — September 7, 2007 @ 5:53 pm

that really is what they call it, no me:)

From viciouswithoutlove — September 7, 2007 @ 6:07 pm

i set it all up and ‘followed you’ and no ‘tweets’ so far
:(

From Graeme — September 7, 2007 @ 6:16 pm

I’m the same as vicious: I got confirmation from Twitter, but so far no messages other than the confirmation message. I keep turning the “notification” to on, but it keeps defaulting to on for some reason. It seems I’m not alone. Let’s hope it all resolves itself soon. I so need those tweets. Maybe too many are trying to follow you, that would be my best guess!

G.

From Lillian Joyce — September 7, 2007 @ 6:35 pm

Lol, my apologies graeme :) yes, i should’ve said that any devoted fan who is @ school or work would skip just to see him :D and i’m in the same boat as grame & vicious :S I’m sure I entered my cell number correctly.

From david usher — September 7, 2007 @ 6:37 pm

From shannon — September 7, 2007 @ 6:51 pm

From brebichex — September 7, 2007 @ 9:55 pm

oh gosh ! i dont understand how to use twitter ! somebody can explain how to use it please?

From andylou — September 7, 2007 @ 10:33 pm

when you click on the link on this page, it will take you to David’s twitter page. On the right there will be a place to login or sign up. Sign up there. Then you can type davidusher into the little search bar and come back to his page. Once you’re there, click on “follow” in his top left corner. Make sure the little bar under his name says notification is on and I think you should be good to go.

From andylou — September 7, 2007 @ 10:35 pm

I just realized that I didn’t get the test that was sent 25 minutes ago, so maybe this isn’t right.

From mirtle11 — September 7, 2007 @ 10:47 pm

David,

Huge, huge fan and firt time contributor. Not sure if you will get this or even read this but I have to share some thoughts . . .

My wife and I have followed you through Moist in the early years all the way to your amazing work as a individual artist, and I must say I have seen you too many times to count. The most recent was at Junofest in Saskatoon at Louis’ Pub. Hands down, one of the best interactive and up close shows we have seen you perform. We were both impressed. It was comparable to your perfomance in Prince Albert, SK at their new center for the arts. Again, AMAZING!
However, we are both saddened by your latest tour anouncement that no Saskatoon show was in sight. Is there a chance you will be making your way back to Saskatoon in the next year??? The prairies need your music and we have the ambience for your first class shows!

Sleepless in Saskatoon,
T & J Mirtle

From shannon — September 7, 2007 @ 10:49 pm

andylou - check your time settings. Twitter doesnt send notifications overnight and, if you dont have it set for the correct time zone, that may be why you didnt get it.

From david usher — September 7, 2007 @ 10:53 pm

did you get it shan?

From shannon — September 7, 2007 @ 10:55 pm

yep! It is working fine for me. But it took me about a day of tinkering to work it all out! :)

From laleavitt — September 7, 2007 @ 11:03 pm

“you only need take part in as much as is comfortable for you” (wink wink)
“thats half the fun, getting it all up and running” [OH MY!!!)
Always a gentleman - then you just ‘Rock Like Hell’! Go David, Go David!
Laura and Graeme: I totally agree and chuckle along the way with you two. Impromptu?! I don’t have a cell either… ah shucks Pa!
I just saw MAROON 5 on Fashion Rocks: Sucked
David: Always so much BETTER!!! (did you see that guy?! (M5) I think he actually ’skipped’ on international tv?!!!!!! What the hell?
David: you so deserve that level of fame. That guy should be…. well, not on international tv!
Go david
xoxo

From laleavitt — September 7, 2007 @ 11:16 pm

I just logged on to Twitter.
I ‘found’ davidusher (thankfully oh so long ago!).
I clicked ‘follow’.
Now what?! Can anyone confirm or deny that there is more to do than that?
Thanks in advance.
Still keeping up with you.

From emilyanfield/viciouswithoutlove — September 7, 2007 @ 11:17 pm

i clicked follow too a few days ago and nothing happened
believe you have to send “follow davidusher” to a certain number

From starsatnight — September 7, 2007 @ 11:30 pm

i’m still struggling with twitter too. i can’t even follow people on the web yet. i’ve sent them an email - i’m sure it’ll all make sense soon!

From P — September 7, 2007 @ 11:33 pm

i just added it too and i’m just trying to put my notification on, i sent the text out already but it still hasn’t updated it yet… i dunno, we’ll see! :)

From shannon — September 7, 2007 @ 11:34 pm

Yes, for me, I clicked to follow online but to get them sent to my phone, I had to add my cell phone onto the account, turn notifications on and then send a text saying “follow davidusher” (without the quotation marks) to 21212.

Once you get it set up, it is insanely addictive!

From P — September 7, 2007 @ 11:38 pm

oh boy yet another thing for me to get addicted to, oh technology!!! lol

thx shannon let me see it’ll work!

From laleavitt — September 7, 2007 @ 11:50 pm

I understand that clicking ‘follow’ was all one can do when following online only.
I don’t have a cellular so ‘notifications’ are irrelevant.
DAVID: LOW LOW LOW. I would just go gaga if I ever ’saw’ you sing that live!
And, if I never have the pleasure of ‘getting there’ (to SEE you sing it silly!) please ensure that it is recorded on a DVD concert !!! You’ll have my dollars.
xoxo

that’s why mines wasn’t working too….i have to figure that out when i’m back in canada : ) i forgot to bring my cellphone charger…but i have my laptop…looks like all of you had fun setting twitter up…
how’s the contest going, david? did you think about something yet…i’m excited to see the responses : )

From Dark_Angel — September 8, 2007 @ 10:14 am

I just joined twitter. I am trying to set it up to receive updates. I went to verify my account via my phone and sent the code it gave me to 21212… but it’s been awhile and I haven’t got a message yet saying it was approved. How long did this part take for everyone else?

From shannon — September 8, 2007 @ 1:49 pm

I got the message back pretty much right away… you might want to try verifying again.

From andylou — September 8, 2007 @ 2:41 pm

Shannon-did you get a message to your mobile saying you’d done it? I have tried three times now, but no luck. For the phone # I put +1519…. Is that right?

From Dark_Angel — September 8, 2007 @ 2:42 pm

Hmm….
I tried a second time and it’s still the same. Sounds silly but it has nothing to do with it being a weekend right? They run all the time. I e-mailed support so maybe they’ll be able to help me out. Try, try, try again :P

From shannon — September 8, 2007 @ 4:01 pm

yes, it is +1(areacode)(number)

Maybe they are just behind this weekend. I texted the verification code in and got a response saying to reply to this message with any updates.

From brebichex — September 8, 2007 @ 5:21 pm

Hi David,
Since that I saw your tattoo on your arm, i wonder what does it mean?
I know that it’s words, but im curious to know what are these words.

From Bryan — September 8, 2007 @ 6:18 pm

David doesn’t have any tattoos on his arms.
he has some branding on his upper arms.
and a lot of the time he writes lyrics on his fore-arm to remember during shows.

From robyn — September 8, 2007 @ 7:34 pm

argh, I am among the leigons of people having problems with twitter mobile…

set up an account this afternoon and am trying to confirm my mobile phone number… it tells me to send a weird confirmation code (and i do) but it does absolutely nothing. well i guess i’ll figure it out sooner or later. maybe this “follow davidusher” thing might work better than manually synching my account.

From P — September 8, 2007 @ 7:50 pm

i tried it all too, still having trouble, i sent the message and i haven’t received anything yet! i can’t even turn notifications on, i added it over two times, did the “follow davidusher” thing… still no cigar. i added my mobile +1 area code and number… anyone know how to make it work?!

Thanks again
P

From andylou — September 9, 2007 @ 12:05 am

I’m certain it’s a glitch and there is nothing we can do but wait until it’s sorted. Maybe after the weekend.

From david usher — September 9, 2007 @ 2:27 am

try this
make sure youve signed up to twitter.

to turn notification on
go to my twitter profile page, (it has to be the profile page) to get there just click on the twitter icon at the top right at davidusher.com
just to the right of my name is its says follow and notification just click there (and thats where you turn notifications on and off)
tell me below if its working for you, i dont think there is a glitch as lots of my friends use it and no one is having problems?
x

From emilyanfield/viciouswithoutlove — September 9, 2007 @ 4:32 am

i guess twitter just doesn’t like some of us! *sigh*
because my profile tells me i’m following you, and says notifications are on, and i’ve sent the ‘follow davidusher’ txt. and yet still no luck

From david usher — September 9, 2007 @ 6:48 am

but i havent sent a tweet today, ok see if you get this

im sending “sunday morning, great time to write”

From Lillian Joyce — September 9, 2007 @ 8:47 am

I went through those steps you just posted. I realized that the “notifications” part didn’t go through on the net after choosing “On” on my browser (IE). I noticed that it kept saying “Error on page.” So I tried signing in again using FireFox instead of IE, and it worked. Is it possible that it could be a problem to get started “following” you bc of the browser a person could be using? I deleted and started over for my mobile settings about 3x bc I didn’t get a txt back immediately like Shannon did. Btw, I hope you don’t get notifications every time someone starts following you! I sent “follow davidusher” about 3x, and I have no doubt that a lot of people are probably sending repetitively hoping for a response =| I hope I get the next tweet you send out. It’s the only way to find out if it worked!

From david usher — September 9, 2007 @ 9:01 am

ill post it again
tell me if it works

From Kristine — September 9, 2007 @ 9:42 am

Hey David, I remember an interview earlier this year where you said you needed a hobby. Well, I think you found one…tech support!

From david usher — September 9, 2007 @ 9:50 am

funny how you start to understand this stuff till it becomes second nature
x

From andylou — September 9, 2007 @ 10:17 am

No such luck for me. My notifications are on and I’ve sent the text (a couple of times). The help section said that when it has been accepted, the code you were asked to text will disappear off your settings page. When I do to my settings page, it’s still there, so it looks like it hasn’t gone through. I’ve tried three times over two days. I use firefox already, so I can’t try that. I’ve checked the timezone. Anyone have any more ideas?

From Dark_Angel — September 9, 2007 @ 10:20 am

I tried changing my browser. Good idea! After I did that I was able to set the notifications on but it’s still being silly and won’t even verify me from my phone. I also tried texting on and help like it suggests and got no txt back.

From andylou — September 9, 2007 @ 10:25 am

the “follow davidusher” text isn’t working either. Did everyone use the 21212 number?

From DiamondWillow — September 9, 2007 @ 12:40 pm

Looks like everything is set up ok for twitter et al but I haven’t received any of the messages…. mind you - I am in the middle of nowhere and don’t often get a chance to be online these last few days… even my cell isn’t working WAAAH! What is happening to the contest? Is it over? (hope springs eternal that I still have a chance)

From DiamondWillow — September 9, 2007 @ 12:41 pm

Oh- I was able to add my own twitter with my cell at the airport so I should be signed up ok… I did do the 21212 thing …

From emilyanfield/viciouswithoutlove — September 9, 2007 @ 1:00 pm

yeah, i’ve been set up for about a week now and haven’t recieved any of them
could be i just have really bad service where i am? Maybe one day a flood of tweets will all come at once haha.

david, maybe for me i should just give you my a number and you could you know..just tell me what you were going to twitter. works for me. :)

From andylou — September 9, 2007 @ 1:12 pm

From starsatnight — September 9, 2007 @ 2:25 pm

From andylou — September 9, 2007 @ 2:51 pm

Not crazy. We’re merely technologically challenged.

I still say it’s a glitch of some sort and David’s friends that had no problem were just lucky. It seems like lots of people are still not having success with the phone part.

From Bryan — September 9, 2007 @ 2:51 pm

aaah, well i usually have no problems with tech-stuff, but twitter has beaten me too. we only have internet explorer on my computer… i may have to try firefox on the school computers (if the filter hasn’t blocked twitter yet)

this is mildly amusing. i’m wondering if it’s just a patience issue… i’m an extremely impatient person.

From robyn — September 9, 2007 @ 4:51 pm

sweet. i’ve got it set up now - i think it was my browser or something. i bit the bullet and just installed firefox on my own - and it worked. maybe it was just busy when i tried the first time(s)??

i think you also have to make sure (positive!!) that you’re on the right time zone. there’s an option in ’settings’ under the first tab labelled “Account” that is to set your time zone. i helped my friend after mine got sorted, and her problem was the time zone.
i think someone up above mentioned it, but it’s really extra important that you set the zone correctly!!

From brebichex — September 9, 2007 @ 9:01 pm

HAHA DAVID! do you remember about the story of the fat monkey ?

From P — September 9, 2007 @ 11:36 pm

to be honest i’ll have to agree with bryan, this is amusing reading all the comments… mine included… and robyn i’ll agree with you, i’m extremely impatient too and i’ll admit i’m not the best at tech stuff but i’m not THAT bad! lol but yes i did install firefox and i received the texts back right away and i was actually able to put notifications on!!! (David before it wouldn’t let me, turn notfications on because i wasn’t even able to get the text back once i put the password in to confirm)
everyone that’s having a problem follow the directions that’s posted just make sure you have firefox, i ended up downloading it, and i always use IE

i’m just waiting for david, to send a new “tweet” haha to see if i can receive it

From morphinebaby — September 10, 2007 @ 12:46 am

i have been “set up” for awhile, sent the text, didn’t receive a text confirmation back and never received the updates.
so once a day for the past few days i tried sending the text again, to no avail… but.. i just tried ten minutes ago and immediately received a text confirmation telling me that i am now following davidusher - yay. so maybe all the extra downloading and playing around with time zones isn’t necessary (i definitely didn’t), just keep trying?

From andylou — September 10, 2007 @ 1:10 am

I have always had firefox and still have the problem. I tried texting again, but nothing yet. This is the fifth text. I’m not convinced I will ever manage to get the phone thing set up. At least I get them on the web though.

From david usher — September 10, 2007 @ 1:56 am

i just twittered
“for everyone trying to get this to work, a test…”

From morphinebaby — September 10, 2007 @ 1:57 am

don’t worry andylou, i’m sure it will work eventually, keep trying, i had to keep from throwing my phone at the wall all week so i know how you feel

From P — September 10, 2007 @ 2:11 am

I just got the text it works! Andylou try downloading firefox, because i was doing everything right on IE, and i was about to throw my phone on the ground and run it over too, but when i used firefox and tried it all once, it worked instantly!

From P — September 10, 2007 @ 2:47 am

Finally my phone was verified!! Yay!!! It didn’t send me a message to my phone saying it was. Not sure if it was supposed to. I was able to send a txt from my phone… and i sent that follow davidusher message. So hopefully it will work now! Thanks everyone for their help!

From andylou — September 10, 2007 @ 9:51 am

Didn’t work for me :(

From andylou — September 10, 2007 @ 10:02 am

video was a nice intro to what twitter is, but didn’t get into techno specifics or hit on any problems, so I’m in the same boat. Am I the only one now?

From andylou — September 10, 2007 @ 10:07 am

GRR. ARG. Boo Urn! That’s all I’ve got to say about now.

From Jonathan Gallivan — September 10, 2007 @ 10:35 am

Worked fine for me first go … I wondered what was vibrating next to my bed in the whee hours of the morning! :)

From Dark_Angel — September 10, 2007 @ 10:38 am

Don’t give up andylou!! You know me, i’m very impatient. I was about ready to throw my cell out the window. lol! I sent so many messages just trying different ways. Then I gave up and this morning I logged in to Twitter and it looked different on that page… the txt code i entered was gone. Still don’t know if I have the second part set up for receiving the alerts but we’ll see. I also thought it was because of my provider.

From Jonathan Gallivan — September 10, 2007 @ 10:52 am

I even got that *cough*TWEET*cough* in under a minute on my phone … not that I’m trying to rub it in … I’m just saying don’t give up.

From andylou — September 10, 2007 @ 11:08 am

If you were trying to rub it in, I would at least have the satisfaction of knowing that it woke you up ;)

From andylou — September 10, 2007 @ 11:12 am

Ohhhh….that tweet…
See, I didn’t know there was a new one because my bloody phone doesn’t work. I wish I could send it to one of you through the web so you could use your magic touch. My Irish is failing me, it appears.

From shannon — September 10, 2007 @ 11:14 am

“I wondered what was vibrating next to my bed in the whee hours of the morning!” *cough* well… forget it… it’s just too easy… no comment! LOL!

From david usher — September 10, 2007 @ 11:19 am

I LOVE technology…. I LOVE technology…. I LOVE technology…. I LOVE technology…. My newest mantra … (actually, I DO love technology… I sometimes have challenges is all :D)

From Nath. — September 28, 2007 @ 2:30 pm

I really like the new site. The oldest one was cool but, this one is more clear. Not too much images to disturb our attention. You were looking for an hobby, i guess you found one. This new website, take alot of your time.

With the site, i feel like i can fallow you everywhere. Long time ago… very long time ago when i was a teenager (ho la la that’s so far away now). I would have to ”chase’, you everywhere (hotel), after the show… But, now with technologie, i can ”chase” from home or anywhere else. Meet new people.

Like diamondwillow says ”i love technology”. Keep you good work. And bravo to all the people who’s working on that website.
