Why do i always leave something to struggle with for the end!

by david usher on March 26, 2008 at 7:20 am

maybe its all those years of school, do 90 percent on inspiration and save the last 10 percent till you’re almost out of  (we all need desperation:) maybe i need to feel the pressure of the last days of recording to get fired up again and write the final words. we decided on a whim last week to scrap one song and breathe life into another. thats fine, but then there are those pesky lyrics that im working and reworking. jon and kevin come back up on friday to record it on saturday. so its crunch time. you know what im talking about…

I can relate - 3 novels to read, two essays and one exam to write, a family that needs time all in the next few weeks and oh did I mention the full time job? And what am I doing now? Gee I wonder if David updated the site…maybe I’ll just check…

There just something about cruch time though. The cold sweat, the nail biting, the lack of sleep… LOL The best work can come from it.

Plenty of positve energy your way.

I’m still impressed since I’m more 10% inspiration and 90% desperation! LOL! But whatever works right?

I know exactly what you mean elizabethlouise….it’s so true, no matter how busy I am at work or at home I ALWAYS find the time to check if David has updated the website. :)

Good luck with the lyrics David!

Well, maybe the struggling is all part of the process, without we don’t appreciate the end result as much, I don’t know. Not that we look for struggling or problems or the like but I think part of living on this planet involves this, the tough with easy, usually never just easy unfortunately.

I work better under pressure when I’m creating..especially in the time crunch. I usually have a general plan, but I’m more creative when I’m in the throes of the moment. In the words of one of my favorite people artist/figure skater Toller Cranston (Order Of Canada and Canada Walk Of Fame recipient):

“Sometimes I physically ache with the desire to outdo myself. My head feels as if it would burst and I am consumed by a torrent of energy. A need to create. At other times I am gripped by a supreme inertia, an ultimate lethargy, when I feel nothing, nothing, nothing.”

“I have a burning compulsion to achieve. To do everything, everywhere. Never to stop moving forward, even for one moment. There is so much to be done, and time is always my enemy.”

“Sometimes you think you are running away, only to find that you are just arriving”

“Wings are not only for birds; they are also for minds”

“Artists are the tools of God. They are driven mercilessly towards goals they are powerless to alter. They are the instruments of destiny. Their lives are not their own”

“If you cannot understand my silences, how can you begin to understand my words?”

:These are some of my favorite Toller inspirational quotes :there are many more that are humorous and biting and ingenious….but you’ll have to dig to find them. When I went to his studio to pick up one of his famous original paintings that I had purchased, I got to speak with him about life and art and human foibles. This is a man that literally gave me the shirt off his back when I remarked how much I liked it. He said, “Well, then I am going to give it to you.” He took the shirt off, turned, walked out of the room with his arms over his head like he had just given a performance. My husband and I thought ..”Is that it? Is he going to return?” He came out a few minutes later with another shirt on, but I will never forget that experience.” I still have his purple blouse in my closet! His paintings are hanging on the wall:-)I look at them everyday for inspiration.

Keep pressing on David…your creative juices will explode with many colors when the time is right.

crunch time…. fun time… maybe. Who DOESN’T know what that feels like??

the struggle is worth it, just as michael says, and i guess sometimes we do need that bit of pressure to get us on a roll again.

im with you, Shan. LOL

*sending positive energy all your way* ;)

Thanks Yvette for those Toller Cranston quotes, great read. A remarkable individual, ahead of his time with his skating style, a true artist. Love that saying about running away just to find you are arriving, very interesting indeed.
