How Do We Adapt to AI? Creativity, Reinvention and the Human Advantage

I think one of the biggest questions right now is not whether artificial intelligence is going to change the way we work. It already is. The more interesting question is how we adapt when the environment around us changes this quickly. How do we learn the new tools without losing the things that make us valuable in the first place? For me, that question has a lot less to do with technology than it does with creativity.

Creativity has always been how I adapt. It is not just about making art or coming up with ideas. It is the ability to look at a new environment, understand that the rules have changed, experiment, make connections and figure out where you fit. I have gone through that process a few times in my life, and it is one of the reasons I now spend so much of my time speaking to companies about AI, creativity and reinvention.

From Music to Artificial Intelligence

I spent years as a musician, living in New York, making records, touring and eventually selling more than 1.5 million albums. Music was the world I understood. I knew the language, I knew how creative teams worked, and I understood how strange the process of making something new could be. Sometimes an idea came together immediately. Sometimes you spent weeks chasing something that never quite worked.

At the same time, I became increasingly interested in creativity itself. Why do some people and organizations keep reinventing themselves while others get stuck? Why do certain environments produce ideas while others quietly kill them? That fascination eventually became my book Let the Elephants Run, and it also led me into keynote speaking about creativity and innovation with companies around the world.

About 15 years ago, artificial intelligence started to feel like the next enormous shift. I could see that it was going to change the tools we used to create, the way companies operated and eventually the relationship between humans and technology. But there was one problem. I did not want to become somebody who just talked about AI.

I Wanted to Understand AI by Building With It

When I am on stage, I want to speak about things I have actually experienced. There are already enough talking heads explaining something they read yesterday, and now there are millions of talking-head videos summarizing what all the other talking heads said. That has never been very interesting to me.

If I was going to talk about artificial intelligence, I wanted to build with it. I wanted to see what happened when AI left the demo and entered the real world, where people are unpredictable, technology breaks and almost every idea changes once you actually start building it.

About ten years ago, I did my first major AI project with Google. We created Lyric AI, an artificial intelligence system designed to collaborate with humans writing song lyrics. What interested me was not getting the machine to replace the songwriter. It was what happened when you inserted AI into a human creative process and suddenly had this strange new collaborator suggesting ideas back to you.

That project changed the direction of my life. I caught the AI bug, and eight years ago I started Reimagine AI. Since then, we have been building AI-powered virtual beings, interfaces and companies, with much of the work focused on the place I still find most interesting: the interface between artificial intelligence and human experience.

Reinvention Is Something You Learn

Moving from music into artificial intelligence felt a lot like moving from one genre into another. The language changed, the tools changed, the people changed, and many of the things I understood instinctively no longer worked in exactly the same way. Suddenly I was a beginner again, and there is something both uncomfortable and useful about that.

You experiment. You get things wrong. You ask stupid questions. You slowly start to understand the new language and recognize the patterns. Then something interesting begins to happen. You start bringing pieces of the world you came from into the new one, and those combinations often become the most valuable part.

I think that is where many people and companies are right now with AI. We are all being dropped into a new environment together. Some people are excited, some are terrified, and most of us move back and forth between the two. But I do not think waiting for the old environment to return is much of a strategy. We have to learn how to move inside the new one.

AI Is Becoming the Auto-Tune of Everything

Coming from music, I keep thinking about generative AI as the auto-tune of everything. Auto-Tune made it possible to get a vocal to pretty good very quickly. Generative AI is beginning to do something similar with writing, images, presentations, advertising, software, video and music.

Pretty good is becoming incredibly easy to produce. That is the part I think people underestimate.

When millions of us are using similar models, trained on huge amounts of the same human output, we inevitably create enormous quantities of things that are polished but familiar. Good, but the same. You can already feel it in the endless stream of AI writing, AI images and AI videos moving past us every day.

The more abundant the average becomes, the more valuable the unusual becomes. Taste starts to matter more. Point of view matters more. The strange combination of your history, your experience, your instincts and your imperfections starts to matter more because that is where difference comes from.

Creativity Becomes More Important in the Age of AI

This is why I do not think AI makes human creativity less important. I think it makes creativity more valuable.

AI can give you 50 ideas in a few seconds. That does not mean any of them are interesting. Somebody still has to decide what is worth pursuing, when the obvious answer is boring, when to push further and when something feels right even though you cannot completely explain why.

That is creativity too. It is judgement, taste, curiosity and the willingness to experiment. In an environment where generation becomes almost free, deciding what is worth making becomes a much bigger part of the job.

For companies, I think this is one of the central questions of the AI transition. It is not simply, “How much AI can we use?” It is, “What becomes more valuable because AI can now do so much?” That is a very different question, and I think it leads to much more interesting answers.

Why My AI and Creativity Keynotes Have to Be Live

This also shapes how I think about my work as an AI and creativity keynote speaker. We live in a world with millions of YouTube videos, podcasts, TED Talks, summaries and generated presentations. If I am asking hundreds or thousands of people to come together in a room, there has to be a reason they are actually there.

I do not want to give a keynote that could just as easily have been a video. I want the room to matter. I use music, conversation, live experimentation, storytelling, humour and emotion because those things change when people experience them together. The audience responds, I respond to the audience, things occasionally go sideways, and the experience becomes something that only really exists in that moment.

I have spent decades on stages, sometimes in front of 20,000, 30,000 or 40,000 people. One thing you learn very quickly is that you cannot teach people anything if you cannot get their attention. So I use everything I have learned from music, creativity, entrepreneurship and building AI to make the keynote feel like an experience rather than a lecture.

The goal is not to give people a list of AI tools. Those lists are out of date almost as soon as you make them. I want people to understand the larger change that is happening, to feel curious rather than intimidated, and to leave wanting to experiment. If they walk out thinking, “I can participate in this,” then I think we have accomplished something much more useful.

How Should People and Companies Adapt to AI?

For me, adapting to AI starts with becoming comfortable experimenting before you completely understand where everything is going. Nobody knows exactly how this ends. The technology is moving too quickly, and anyone who claims to know precisely what the world will look like ten years from now is guessing.

But we do not need to know the ending to start learning the language. Use the tools. Understand what they do well and what they do badly. Pay attention to what suddenly becomes easier, then ask what becomes more valuable because of that change. Most importantly, do not throw away the things that make you distinctive just because a machine can now produce something that looks superficially similar.

I moved from music into artificial intelligence because the environment was changing and I wanted to understand what was coming. That transition taught me something I keep coming back to now. Adaptability is not about abandoning who you are. It is about understanding what is uniquely yours and figuring out how it creates value in a new environment.

That is also the idea at the centre of my AI, creativity and innovation keynotes. AI is going to keep changing. The models we are amazed by today will probably look primitive surprisingly quickly. I do not think our advantage will come from memorizing every new tool as it arrives. I think it will come from becoming better at adapting, experimenting and using our creativity to decide what should come next.
